Basbousa | Turkish Delicacy

Basbousa is a Turkish delicacy made with semolina and coconut. It is mostly served as a dessert. You may wonder how I all of a sudden came across this dish. I had no clue such a dish existed till few days back when I came across this dish in google. I was searching for a dish to made up of semolina as I unexpectedly stocked upon an extra bag of semolina and my husband is not a big fan of semolina kichadi or upma. So I made the kesari few times and the rava dosa and was still left with lots :) I went searching for a new dish when I came across this. It looked very tasty and delicious, and so I thought of trying out this recipe. It was a big hit and i had already made it 3 times the last two weeks.
It is very easy to make and just tastes so great. If you like coconut in sweets then this is the dessert for you!

Makes 8x8 inch pan
Ingredients Required:
Semolina - 1 1/4 cup
Dessicated Coconut - 1/2 cup
Sugar - 1/2 cup
Baking Powder - 1 tsp
Butter - 1/4 cup
Yogurt - 1/2 cup
Vanilla - 1 tsp

For the Sugar Syrup:
Sugar - 1 cup
Water - 1 cup
Rose Water - 1 tsp

How to make?
Pre heat the oven to 350 F.
Grease a 8x8 pan with butter and keep it ready.
In a large mixing bowl, add the semolina, coconut, sugar and baking powder and mix well.
Add in the wet ingredients - butter, yogurt and vanilla. Mix well till you get a dense batter.
Spread this batter in the pan and bake for 45 minutes or until you get a golden brown top.
After 30 minutes, prepare the sugar syrup.
Boil 1 cup water and add the sugar and rose water. Just boil till the sugar has dissolved in the water and set aside.
Once the basbousa is baked with a golden brown top, remove the pan from the oven and slowly pour the warm sugar syrup over the basbousa.
Now place back into the oven and bake for another 15 minutes.
The basbousa would have absorbed all the sugar syrup.
After 15 minutes, remove from the oven and slice into pieces as desired.
If desired you can garnish with nuts as your wish.
Serve warm.
