Puliyodare | Puliyogare | Tamarind Rice

I am sure all of you would have tasted this at some point in your life, it is a simple rice dish made with tamarind. Usually the mix for this rice - Pulikaachal is made ahead and can be stored for months in the fridge, and then it is as simple as mixing it with rice and seasoning. This is also a common prasadam in most of the temples. My mom makes the best Puliyodare for sure and the below recipe is hers - authentic Iyengar Style!

Serves 2-3
Ingredients Required:
Rice - 1 cup
Pulikaachal - 4 tblspn (How to make?)
Turmeric Powder - 1 tsp
Salt - as required

Seasoning:
Sesame Oil - 2 tblsp
Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
Curry Leaves - few
Channa Dhal - 1 tsp
Hing - a big pinch

How to make?
Cook the rice and allow to cool down so the grains are separate. I usually cook the rice with 2 cups of water.
In a pan, add the sesame oil and once hot and add the mustard seeds. Allow to splutter. Add the channa dhal and curry leaves. Add the hing and set aside.
On the rice, add the pulikaachal, salt, turmeric powder. Gently mix with a fork so as to not to mush the rice.
Add the seasoning and mix slightly.
Serve with appalam/chips and yogurt.
