Naans are indian breads which are fermented with yeast and cooked in a tandoori oven. They can be made with all purpose flour or wheat or a combination of both.
I have tried to make an instant naan which requires no fermentation from yeast and uses a mix of whole wheat and all purpose flour.
You can bake them in the oven or the stove top on top of a griddle or using an airfryer. I prefer the stove top as it was more quick and the taste was the best.
Ingredients Required:
Whole wheat flour - 1 cup
All purpose flour - 1 cup
Salt - 1 tsp
Sugar - 2 tsp
Baking soda - 1/4 tsp
Baking powder - 1 tsp
Oil - 1 tblsp + 1 tsp
Warm milk - 1/4 cup
Yogurt / Curd - 1 cup
Garlic Butter:
Butter - 2 tblsp, room temperature
Garlic - 2 tblsp, minced
Cilantro - 1 tblsp, finely chopped
How to make:
In a large mixing bowl combine the flours, salt, sugar, baking soda, baking powder and mix well.
Add the oil and crumble well.
Add the yogurt and mix well and combine the dough.
Add the warm milk and start kneading the dough for about 5-8 minutes.
Smear a tsp of oil and cover with a kitchen cloth and keep in a warm place for 30 minutes.
Make equal size balls, roll them smooth without cracks.
Roll out the dough into an oval shape. You can roll it into a circle and elongate it to oval.
How to make on stove top:
Heat a cast iron skillet on high heat.
Place on the hot skillet.
Apply the garlic butter immediately.
Within a minute you will notice bubbles on the top side.
Using tongs flip the naan directly on to the flame and allow to cook for 30 seconds. Brown spots should appear on the side down.
Remove and brush with butter and serve hot.
This method is the fastest and easiest and works for a family of 3-4.
How to make in Oven:
Preheat the oven to 400 F.
Place the naan with garlic butter brushed on top, on a baking sheet and bake for 5 minutes.
As bubbles rise, broil for another minute to get the brown spots.
Brush with butter and serve hot.
This method is suggested if you want to make multiple naans at the same time.
How to make in airfryer:
Preheat the airfryer to 400F.
Place the naan brushed with garlic butter in the basket and cook for 6 minutes by flipping in between.
This method takes a long time to make a single naan and is not recommended.
