This is a Karnataka delicacy rice dish with rice lentils vegetables and simmered in tamarind and spices. The authentic recipe calls for cooking them separately and then mixing them. The below recipe is an easy one pot meal in the instant pot.
This is one wholesome meal with carbs proteins and vegetables. Makes a great weekend lunch served with chips or vadam of your choice.
Toor dhal - 1/2 cup
Sambhar onion - 10
Carrot - 2, cubed
Potato - 1, cubed
Beans - 15, 1 inch piece
Capsicum - 1
Turmeric - 1 tsp
Salt - to taste
Coconut oil - 1 tblsp
Tamarind - 1.5 tbslp
Water - 6 cups
Bisibelebath powder - 2 tblsp
Ghee - 1 tblsp
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Red chilli - 2
Curry leaves - 10
Hing - pinch
Cashews - 10
How to make:
Soak the rice and dhal for 20 minutes.
Set the IP in saute mode and add the coconut oil.
Add the sambhar onions and capsicum and saute for a couple of minutes.
Add the other vegetables along with rice and dhal.
Add the water mixed with tamarind paste.
Add the spice powder and salt. Give a final mix and cook in the rice mode -10-15 minutes.
Natural pressure release.
In a small pan heat the ghee, and add the cashews, saute till golden brown.
Add the mustard seeds and allow to splutter.
Add the hing and curry leaves.
Season the rice and serve hot with vadam.
