Irish Apple Cake

This is a traditional Irish recipe and best taste when served with a smooth custard sauce. But we loved this with some homemade vanilla ice cream.
This recipe calls for minimal ingredients and uses butter which gives the nice texture to it and cannot be substituted with oil or apple sauce.
You can use any tart apple,  granny smith best suits as they hold their shape well upon baking and does not get mushy. But I have used a balance of grant smith and red apple.
The spices that go into it elevates the flavor to another level, though they are subtle.

Makes 10x10 pan
Ingredients Required:
All purpose flour - 3 cups
Sugar - 3/4 cup
Butter - 3/4 cup (chilled and cut into small cubes)
Baking powder - 2 tsp
Cinnamon - 1 tsp
Cloves powder - 1/2 tsp
Nutmeg Powder - 1/2 tsp
Vanilla - 1 tsp
Salt - pinch
Milk - 1 cup
Greek Yogurt - 1/2 cup
Apples - 5 medium size ( peeled, cored and cut into 1 inch chunks) I used 3 red apple and 2 granny smith
Sugar - 2 tblsp

How to make:
Pre heat the oven to 375.
Line a baking dish with parchment paper and butter it lightly.
In a large mixing bowl add the flour and butter.
Crumble with your finger tips till you get a wet sand consistency.
Add the baking powder, salt, sugar, spice powder and mix well.
Add the apple cubes and toss well.
In another mixing bowl, add the yogurt, milk and vanilla.
Whisk well till well combined.
Add the wet mixture to the dry mix.
Mix well with a spatula.
The mixture will be very thick like a bread dough and that is how it should be.
Pour this into the dish and flatten it on top.
Sprinkle the sugar on top and bake for 45 mins to an hour.
Check after 45 minutes as the baking time might vary from oven to oven.
The top should be golden brown and and inserted tooth pick should come out clean.
Allow to cool for 10 minutes and serve warm with some custard sauce or ice cream.

Notes:
Do not substitute butter with anything else.
The dough would be very thick.
Cube the apples into big piece so they don't dissolve in the batter.
I used whole spices and ground them fresh.
